To start this blog post, I would like to introduce myself to those of you who may not know me yet. My name is Caroline Brown and I am a marketing intern for 2020 Vision Quest this summer. I am a rising senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and I am majoring in Journalism and Strategic Communications. Since I was in high school, I knew that I was interested in public relations and marketing as I have always loved being creative, writing, and using social media to connect with others.
It was not until I got to college that I realized the immense power and responsibility that comes with working in the communications industry. Not only do marketers and strategic communicators often have the power to shape how we view a product, issue, or movement, but they can also use social media to achieve various business goals through manipulation and deceitfulness. After delving into my college classes, it became clear to me that I would like to work for an organization that works to better society and its employees.
To me, the common good is a society where every person is valued, recognized, and respected, and opportunities are distributed evenly. Social media is an important tool that we can use to connect individuals, start community dialogue, and spread awareness about various issues. While social media can be used to enhance the common good, it is essential that we are all thoughtful and intentional about how we use this tool as it can also be used to divide communities, incite hate, and spread misinformation.
For these reasons, I decided that being a marketing intern at 2020 Vision Quest would be a great first step in my professional career. This organization furthers the common good by inspiring community members to reach their highest potential and while learning about ability awareness among other issues. In my time as an intern, I have made graphics about educational resources for the blind and guide dogs, attended branding meetings, and done critical work for the mission statement. These are all projects within the realm of marketing that I enjoy and am proud of and I feel as though I am contributing to the common good. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to explore my professional passions in an organization that leaves such a profound impact on its community.
In addition to my belief that my work is creating positive change, this experience is also a time of self-growth and reflection for me. Working for an organization that has the goal of helping individuals recognize their potential has pushed to become the best version of myself. Whether that is learning how to best respond to feedback, working in teams with people from diverse backgrounds, or even believing in myself enough to pursue my passions and goals, I am confident that I am using my knowledge on communication to make positive changes in this community.
In the coming months, I look forward to putting out more content and working with the team while developing professional skills that I can bring back to school with me for my senior year.
